Why do babies need cuddles?

Do you cuddle your baby enough?

Babies need physical contact to feel safe and loved. They need this daily. Thereby, if the parent is responsive to the needs of the baby, the baby will develop a safe attachment.

What is a attachment?

Safe attachment means that the baby develops a feeling of comfort and security. The attachment forms about the first 18 months of life. They need a warm and nurturing environment. Secure attachment will develop if the parent is on daily basis responsive to the babies needs (cries), gives cuddles and interacts with the baby. You will see that the baby does feel secure to start discover the surrounding. Another sign of secure attachment is that when the caretaker leaves the baby/toddles, they will start to cry. When the caretaker comes back, the baby/toddler will be happy to see their caretaker again.

Why is a secure attachment important?

Further in life a person will need a secure attachment to feel well in friendships and intimate relationships. So, someone with a secure attachment will be able to bond more easily in intimate relationships and will feel secure, loved and will trust the other.  People with an insecure attachment, may for example, feel anxious in relationships or avoid relationships.
